Nasty Nelson

A serve deliberately aimed at the non-receiving opponent. Legal under the rules. And almost universally considered bad sportsmanship.

In doubles, only one player on the receiving team returns the serve. But both opponents are standing there. A Nasty Nelson is a serve hit at the non-returning player, who is often parked near the kitchen line and completely unprepared.

And yes, it is legal. If the serve hits the non-receiver, it is the server's point. The ball is live once served, and no rule says the serve has to go to the returner. That is what makes it "nasty": it exploits the letter of the law.

In practice, it is one of the cheapest moves in pickleball. Pull it regularly in rec and you will stop getting invited back. In tournaments it is rare. Part sportsmanship, part math: a good player just dodges, and you have wasted a serve. If it happens to you: stay alert on the serve, and remember who did it.
