Dwell time
How long the ball stays on the paddle face at contact. The split-second that decides control.
Thicker cores compress more at contact, so the ball sits on the face a fraction longer. That is dwell time. That extra instant gives you more command over direction and depth, plus a plusher, more muted feel. Thinner cores do the opposite: the ball gets in and out fast, which means more pop but hotter, less-forgiving contact on soft shots.
The face matters too: carbon fiber adds grab and dwell over fiberglass at identical thickness. Part of why carbon generates more spin. If your game lives at the kitchen. Dinks, drops, resets — dwell time is one of the highest-leverage specs you can shop for.
